The Benefits of Raw Sprouts

Many people refer to sprouts as “nutritional powerhouses” because despite their small size, they are packed with vitamins and minerals.

If you’ve never heard of sprouts, they are seeds that have been germinated and become young plants (healthline). Seeds are soaked and then kept at specific temperatures and light exposure, then left to grow for anywhere between 3 and 7 days. They add a delicious crunch to burgers, salads, sandwiches, and stir fries.

Sprouts are rich in amino acids, magnesium, folate, vitamins C & K, and a list of other nutritional vitamins and minerals.

According to Healthline.com, sprouts:

  1. May help regulate blood sugar – Sprouts are believed to regulate the amylase enzyme, which the body uses to break down and digest sugars

  2. Can aid digestion – Sprouts are also thought to reduce insoluble fiber- the form of fiber that helps form stools and more through the gut, which helps to reduce the risk of constipation. If you struggle with digestive issue like a sluggish metabolism or constipation, consider adding sprouts to your diet!

  3. May improve heart health. – Animal studies show that eating sprouts may increase “good” HDL cholesterol and reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol levels

Sprouts are easy to grow from home, too. You just need a handful of materials: a sprouting jar, sprouting seeds, and water. That’s it! Here is a photo of what the sprouts look like after about two days:

Every type of sprouting seed may be a little different, so follow the instructions specifically listed on whichever you try.
